Setting

Image
This is where the second half of my film is going to take place. This is a picture of my backyard, which I think is very nice and would look great on camera. The goal is to have the main character in the center of this, and show the scenery around him but also show a time skip so we can see the world get darker around him. This is actually a high angle taken from my window, so I think I'm going to shoot a little from this angle and then actually go outside and film from there too. The look of it will be a bit different but I think it'll be just as nice.

Script

So I started writing my script, I'm going to post the first draft soon but I need to talk to my brother too and run things over with him. I don't want him doing anything too challenging because he hasn't acted before and I don't want it to sound awkward.

Elements: Foreshadowing

The foreshadowing in the film isn't too heavy. The main foreshadowing that can be identified is a mention to something that happened in the past, which would obviously be addressed later in the film. But since this is a more self-discovery centered coming-of-age film, there isn't much foreshadowing on the whole in the opening.  I tried to think of ways that I could add foreshadowing, but I don't want to force too many things into the film since it's just supposed to be an intro. Also, even though I know it could be done for this genre, I just feel like that's more of a horror or mystery film feature. Even so, I'm still not ruling it out just in case I do some editing and see where I can add it to the film.

Elements: Tone

The tone of the film is very quiet and somber. There are no loud sounds or bright themes being showed. I'm also going to try and color correct the video in editing using a filter so that the colors are more blue overall. I think this will add to the overall feeling and mood. The voice of the character is going to sound a bit melancholic which will also add to the blue feeling of the film.  Since the opening is only two minutes, I want to try and maintain the same tone all the way through. I think for an intro, it's good to let the audience know how the rest of the film will feel, so I don't want it to be confusing or for the genre to be unclear on video.

Elements: Main Character

My main character is Miles, who is introduced as a neutral character. He is shown from the beginning and is the only character featured in the opening, so it's easy to spot him as the main and get interested in his story. His personality will be explained more as the audience listens to his inner thoughts and see his routine, which includes running. Being a star student and a track star is his main character traits, so I wanted to include both things in his thoughts and physically in the film, for example seeing him run.  Since it's only the opening, his character growth that's meant for later in the film will be hinted at a bit in the beginning.

Elements: World

The world my opening takes place is normal. From the beginning, the setting is established as a natural environment and the main character act's as one would in real life. Most coming-of-age films take place in a normal setting, so I decided to mirror that one I've seen and do that for my film too. There will be lots of shots of the environment because my film will show some activities of my character's daily life, along with an elapse of time as the opening comes to an end.  I practiced shooting some jump cuts and time elapse to see which would fit the mood of the opening more.

Elements: Conflict

This first blog is that last out of the five elements; Conflict. Conflict The conflict is introduced near the end. Miles is sitting outside after his run and you can hear his inner thought grow more negative as he thinks to himself. His thoughts go back to something that happened last summer, and the conflict is introduced then. This conflict is only introduced, but it's a major plot point of the film, so it can't be solved in just the opening. The audience can use this, though, to see how weak Miles's state of mind is and how he doesn't like to think about any bad things that could upset him.
