Conventions pt. 2

Image
Part of my convention research included watching a movie I knew well to pick up on conventions. I also did more research on the different types of conventions, like form conventions. Form conventions are the swag people expect a piece of media to be formatted, like putting a title at the beginning of a movie and the credits at the end. Story conventions are similar, in that are key things everyone expects to be in a story, like character change. What I researched last time was just genre conventions, but this time I was able to find out that theres more available.  https://helveticamediuma.com/learn/media-conventions/

Today I did research on conventions in media. This is a subject I knew nothing about, but I did know what codes were and was surprised to see the two subjects related. A good convention that helped me further understand the meaning is Indians who are given thick accents in movies. Of course, not every Indian has a thick accent, but this convention is often reinforced over and over by filmmakers. A lot of conventions aren’t outright picked up on but serve their purpose of making the audience feel a certain way about a character.  Source: https://www.filminquiry.com/analyse-movies-signs/

Genre Research

Today I did some research on the different genres of film so I can better understand how genres affect plots and how they impact the audience. There are so many different main genres and sub genres, and a lot overlap with each other.

Basic Research

I’ve been watching some short films on YouTube that are done by amateurs. I wanted to really get a feel of interesting plots and also camera shots. https://youtu.be/89ShshtCVYQ https://youtu.be/IcnBB5p3JIM

Introduction Part 2

Skills that I have:  I have some skills in recording videos and editing them as I’ve done multiple school projects with videos. I also pick up information quickly so I don’t learning about angles and other movie related things won’t be a problem.  Skills that I need: I mainly need to learn how to make videos properly. That includes professional looking editing and video quality. I also really need to learn how to imput good sound and dialogue that flows well. Also techniques on lighting and camera angles.

Introduction

Hi, my name is Apiphanie. The purpose of this blog is to document the process of creating a film for the Cambridge AS Level Media Studies Class.  I will be working in a team, but I will create an individual fiction film opening. I will take time to carefully analyze and evaluate, then use what I find to research, plan, and construct a detailed film. This project will give me an opportunity to expand what I know and apply it.  Main Tasks: Work as a team, with a maximum of 4, but still work on and submit an individual project.  Document my progress, final project, and reflection.  Use all original texts and images, dialogue and sound, and credited music.
