Ethnic Groups

Ethnic groups are gaining more representation in media. Minorities, especially African Americans, have received more roles in film in the past years. More black roles in film make a dent in the racial stereotypes that have been built for decades due to racism. And not just supporting roles, but main roles with characters who embrace their race and culture and inspire other young black kids to be proud of themselves and to strive for similar accomplishments. African Americans have mainly been displayed as the "thugs" or the "black best friend" or the character who usually dies first, but things have slowly been changing for the better, and directors have been called out for their lack of diversity in casting.

Camera Movements

 Today I went over a topic that I accidently skipped: camera movements. The camera movements are the movement of the camera in the film at the scene is being shot.  First there's the pan, which is when the camera moves steadily from left to right. The tilt, which creates a Dutch angle, is when the camera is tilted at an angle, to provide a distorted effect. The dolly is when the entire camera is moved forward or back, similar but not the same as a zoom. A zoom is only when the lens is moved forward, and it allows for the viewer to focus in on what the director wants to emphasize. The reverse zoom works the same, except the lens is moved backwards and it's usually done to reveal the background and surrounding objects.  The crane is, as the title, as shot that's done on a long mechanical arm that's like a crane, which can widely show the area around the character. Reflection #2

 How do the elements of your production work together to create a sense of branding? Reflection #2 Transcript: I think the element I used the most is jump cuts within the scenes. I tried to show a progression of time using multiple shots to build the scene, instead of using a few long takes. I do have a longer take compared to the rest near the end, but other than that, every scene is cut pretty heavily to show multiple things happening within the scene in a sort of fast paced manner. I used this to show Miles does a lot during his day and there's a lot going on, except at the end when he's just sitting and we're listening to his thoughts. But, I think this created a good branding for me that can be also seen in my preliminary film, because I find it more effective to use multiple cuts instead of a few long takes for a film. I just think it shows a little more, a little more of what's going on in the scene versus just, like, one take following one character. I just thou

Planning!

 After so much research, I finally started planning out my film opening. I've decided to do a coming of age film, because that is a genre that I've seen a lot and can relate to as a teenager. I want my filming to be done outdoors, so I've been trying to build a plot around that idea. So far, all I can think of is good car scene that ends up with the main character getting dropped off.  What plot can be built from that?  In most coming of age movies I've seen, scenes that take place in a car usually feature a fight between two characters while the main character looking out the window. Or, the main character and the driver are having a deep, emotional talk while, again, the main character is looking out the window.  My favorite car scene is from "Clueless," because it's funny and the high energy is something I want to emulate.
